About Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park is located in Lake Victoria near Bukoba town in the Kagera Region of northwestern Tanzania. The park covers a small freshwater island that provides an important refuge for unique wildlife species and indigenous plants. Established in 2013, it is Tanzania’s only island national park and encompasses an area of approximately 2.18 square kilometers. The island’s ecology includes dry forest, rocky cliffs, fertile soils, and freshwater shorelines, supporting species such as colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, bushbucks, and a variety of bird species like kingfishers and fish eagles. Historically, the island holds cultural significance for local communities, serving as a site of traditional storytelling and fishing practices. Visitors to Saanane Island can enjoy hiking nature trails that showcase the island’s diverse flora and fauna, guided wildlife tours, and birdwatching opportunities. The park's proximity to Bukoba makes it easily accessible for day trips, providing tranquil natural surroundings and scenic views of Lake Victoria. Notable landmarks include the Baobab tree, considered ancient by local standards, and rocky outcrops providing panoramic vistas. The park offers both educational and recreational experiences, especially for those interested in freshwater island ecosystems and East African wildlife. Its small size creates an intimate setting for exploration and photography, while also supporting conservation efforts for rare and endemic species in the region.
